"Big Oil" has a pre tax profit of 8%. Their capital outlays are huge. I put in almost 30 years in an oil refinery. The wages for the workers are 1st rate. The money they spend on both environmental upgrades and efficiency are so large that I witnessed more money put in both of them than the cost of the recently purchased refinery. In the case of refining US refineries are some of the most efficient in the world so much so that we have been exporting gasoline and fuel oil.
