Mandating 54 mpg fleet average doesn't mean it can be done by the engineers. As far as being a done deal, nothing done by politicians is a done deal. It all depends on who is in power. If Americans do not want to drive tin cans, then they will not. Almost none of today's vehicles meet the standard for 2025, much less fleet average. Safety is also a huge factor. These mini cars (not even meeting the standards) will be flattened in a highway speed crash. It is all political as we have massive amounts of untapped fossil fuels in the US. It is all about global warming even though we haven't had any in the last decade and a half. Electricity for any EV must be made somehow. Wind and solar are a tiny fraction and electricity loses large amounts in transmission unlike fossil fuels.
