The value of oil does not lay in it's refining but rather it's mass. Diesel is 20% denser than gasoline and hence there is more "oil" in diesel than gasoline. The refining process adds generally 25 cents a gallon while the crude oil is over $2 a gallon. Simply put diesel is more valuable.
I put almost 30 years in an oil refinery from operator to operations supervisor.
