When I worked in the Orange Juice industry, I went to Brazil and saw the ethanol plants from sugar cane. Their waste (bagas) is a dried fiber from the cane and is hauled to the orange juice plants to burn for steam for the plant and to make electricity. The smoke is horrible and would never be tolerated here. I have been on top of their stacks and you can see a stream green with plant life running towards the plant. Downstream from the plant everything is dead. That wouldn't fly here. The cars run on straight ethanol. They all have manual chokes and it is about a minute process to get one ready to run safely. Probably better now. They also have very large deep water oil offshore they are exploiting. Many of the 24 deep water oil rigs left the Gulf after the long drilling moratorium and went to Brazil. The Western US ethanol plants look very big, but are small compared to Brazil. It is just a political thing by the corn states.
