Wrong again! My 2yr lease on the Volt is 177 a month with 2500 down stroke. Figuring the difference in the cost of our old car (20mpg) subtract that from the lease and it costs me $900.00 a year to own. go re-figure!
Don't worry about wind as those farms are growing in the US tremendously. The "grids" are being improved to take care of the "new" energy coming on them. The worst thing about the subsidy was Texas using it to buy windmills from China, real American that!.
With all the refinery fires this week we should see much higher gas prices for a while.
when you turn in your leased vehicle, if it is not worth what they anticipated it would be when you got your lease, will you not owe more money? I thought that was how leases work. When these vehicles are getting a few years on them and a $10,000 battery bill is on the horizon, what will the hulk be worth? A while back the paper had a comparison of cost of a gas vs hybrid car, I think it was a honda civic or some such, and it took 7-10 years for the hybrid to break even.
bumpy - SRTExplorerHmmm, according to Gas Buddy most local stations are at $3.89. Won't be long until we hit that magical spot of $4.00 a gallon.:R

Wind and solar now account for 2% of our nations energy. It is incredibly expensive. The notion that is rapidly expanding is totally wrong. It is supported only by taxpayer subsidies and will disappear when the subsidies are gone. Do you have wind and solar at your house? If no, why not, if it is such a good idea. - tomman58Explorer

Right, LR. No matter how you spin it, these green "alternatives" only work if the dollars are ignored, and then only half-a**.
Here in Colorado the big news story was how wind power furnished over 50% of our power one day last week. Well, not exactly. Actually, it was one night last week. When usage was low. And Lord knows what those KWHs cost. But they were green!
Oh, yeah. You, Mr. and Mrs. U.S. Taxpayer, picked up 30% of the initial costs of these ridiculously expensive turbines. But no thank yous are in order, as the credits expire in a few months and we Colorans will be stuck with the future exorbitant costs. :S

They are already starting to fail on the concrete bases and the government has decided not to repair them. As they fail, they will be sold for scrap. Had all of this money been spent on research, then maybe we would be further along in our search for cheap dependable energy. A simple question for those who have not taken the time to research wind and solar is, "If these make such great economic sense and are such a great deal, how come they are not on every roof top?"

It was 5 years, then everybody would have it. The payback is longer than the usable live of the equipment.

I've sworn off a few times. It's addictive. BTW, your solar investment should have a payback of, well, used to be five years, but we could double that these days. So if your pre-solar monthly electric bills ran $333.33, you'll break even. Assuming there are no maintenance costs. - camperdaveExploreragain with the ROI. So, instead of buying a $60,000 motorhome, I have a $20,000 rig and spent $40,000 on solar. Which is the better investment?
btw, I gassed up our CNG civic today. 36mpg this week, paid $2.18/gallon. Not bad! :B - LindsayRichardsExplorerGovernmental subsidies to "big oil" are very minor and mainly in the form of tax deductions enjoyed by most businesses. The oil companies pay much more in taxes than the average Fortune 500 companies. When you buy a gallon of gas, governments, local, state and federal receive $3 for every $1 the oil companies make. The money that the oil companies goes to it's shareholders which are mainly pension funds and retirees. Subsidies to alternative energies are over 70 times as much as fossil fuels per kg generated. This is before the billions and billion wasted recently by the failed solar companies and battery companies. Solar is extremely expensive and if you are planning on having 100 % of it beware that the value of the power generated, doesn't even come close to paying for the capital required to generate it. The only way for it to be viable is for somebody else (ie, taxpayer) foot the bill for the capital. Now that the publicity of the huge waste involved has become widespread, don't expect the taxpayers to continue to foot the bill for these boondoggles.
