Agree with Cloud Driver- consider driving shorter distances per day. I usually limit myself to about 350 miles per day, and it's a lot easier than when I needed to push it more. Some folks break trips up into shorter legs, too, staying for 2 or even 3 days at various places they want to explore along the way. Lots of ways to do this, and even the OP 500 mile limit gives him a lot of options.
