RV Roof Replacement - Sealing Penetrations

I am getting ready to replace the rubber roof on my Jayco Eagle 263RKS and I have a question/opinion to ask.

When I go to re-install the roof vents, plumbing vents, etc., do I use Eternabond tape over all of the screws and edges or the dicor self leveling sealant?

Of course I will be using the butyl tape under all of the vents mentioned above.

I have seen many videos on people replacing their roof and have seen it done both ways. I have already used Eternabond in the past and am a huge fan of it. I have also used the sealant as well on repairs and maintenance, but it seems to crack up in about a year causing more sealant to be applied.

What are your thoughts?

  • If you are replacing the entire roof, I'd go with Flexarmor. It is about the same price, but a lot better, as there are no seams to worry about.
  • If you're keeping your rig for awhile you could always have it done with FlexArmor. It's like spray on bed liner for your roof. Here's one place that installs it. Rvroof.com
  • Thanks everyone. I may go with both like mosseater says. I'm a "belt & suspenders" type of guy. This is my first roof replacement. Hope it goes the way I plan it to.
  • Any other work I do up there I'm using BOTH. Butyl tape, thin bead of Dicor then Eternabond over top. Leaks never sleep.
  • Personally, after installing the appliances properly (butyl tape etc.)I would use the Eternabond! Seems somewhat defeating to use the Dicor knowing you have to add to or replace every so often. Use the Eternabond and be done with it! JMHO
  • Make sure when you use the butyl tape the screws go thru the middle of the tape.
