RV Security

I read Mike Wendland's blog, Roadtreking. He has a Roadtrek class B and writes about his travels.

His recent topic is that his RV was broken into, and he lost about $12,000 worth of equipment. It's an interesting read and podcast.

Has anyone else had this type of problem?

Are there any type of RV security systems available?

What do you all do to secure your RV?

Here is a link to the story.

  • The only time I worry about our toyhauler is when we are parked somewhere other than a campground. And since that happens rarely, except for being in storage, I don't really do anything other than lock the doors and try not to be gone out of sight for very long.

People steal things out of cars when parked, so I don't see why a motorhome would be any different, except maybe a better, read more expensive, target.
  • One time a number of units around ours in the storage lot were broken into. Thy also tried to get in ours but I always lock only the dead bolt. I could tell they tried because they left some minor marks on the lock.
  • If you don't lock the doors, don't be surprised it the insurance company denies the claim. Of course, they'd have to prove it wasn't locked. One thing we always try to do is find a restaurant where we can watch the rig through the window of the establishment.

I think the thing that would bother me the most from this break in was the loss of the pictures on the camera's storage card. It's a good reminder to upload your pictures to a cloud server anytime you get to a spot with reliable wifi. At least they would still have there photographic memories.

Thank goodness the thieves didn't hurt or steal the doggie.
  • When we had the HTT there was no use locking it.

DW insists I lock the TT when we're away. That just means I have to replace a busted door if it gets broken into. But then again, I can point out to the insurance company that it was indeed broken into.

The most I ever lost was some firewood.
  • If we leave the area, we lock the door. If someone is determined to break in, they will. All the gizmos and gadgets will not stop them. If they break in while I am in it, they will get a very loud and painful surprise.
  • I close my door. That's pretty much it. I will lock it if we are going to be away for more than a little while, but I don't keep anything of major value in it.

Other than that, I have insurance to cover any stuff that is left inside.
