Absolutely no offense taken. I'm a little embarrassed that I didn't think of it before you ;) seeing as I've been down that road.

Might have something to do with liability, too. If that furnace you just had fixed at the dealer burns down your rv, it helps to have some documentation to show the tech was properly trained and likely not the cause due to irresponsible or untrained work.

Certification would be mostly for marketing purposes. Some folks simply want to see a "shingle". I have no problem with that.

Yup, if you are not afraid to dig in don't mind getting hands dirty somwhere YouTube will show you how. Somewhere else online will tell you how. All that is left is having the tools to do it.

The course is usually 6 months and then three years of apprenticeship with an additional 6 to 8 weeks of school each year. At the end you will have a gas ticket, be competent in installing hitches, 5th wheel hitches, replacing rubber roofs, electrical both 120 and 12 and you will know the code in your province (or state), refrigeration, appliances etc etc. It is a "performance objective" type apprenticeship and you need to be signed off on what skill at a time by a journeyman until you are done. I would start with the local college and see if they have the apprenticeship course. I suspect it changes from region to region. This is the way it is in BC.

I think it's a good business model, especially if you can coordinate time and place with your work schedule and your customers. IOW, if your travels are on a schedule, you will have more repeat business. It will certainly help to be in areas where there are the most customers, places like Quartzite, Yuma, or any of the major areas that RV's flock, also.

One of the good things about a repair business like this is that capitalization costs are fairly low. An extended set of tools and a small inventory would probably get the business launched. A downside is that ROI is going to be meager for the start-up. I could be wrong on that, the OP may hit a "honey hole" of customers but it isn't a "get rich quick" situation (I think the OP knows this).

I would inquire with the RVIA certification folks and see if they have any information for you. I would stay away from any RV repair schools unless you have the time and money and they are affiliated with a certification program.

I think you're probably correct. On the other hand, who knows to what degree banks will start to require "certified" inspections before approving loans on larger RV purchases. Time will tell. In that case, there would be more of a need for RV inspectors.
