Let me be a little more specific. I'm not interested in doing this for myself. I'm interested in making a buck. Marketing myself to campgrounds, banks, etc. For this kind of stuff you need a "certification" of some sort. To be competitive, do you need to be able to hang out your shield, so to speak.
I'm fairly competent on all of the sytems of an RV having owned one for over twenty years. I'm approaching the next phase of my life and I want to be prepared as much as possible.
As some one else said, learn by the seat of your pants and go slow for quality. At an earlier time I considered doing just what you are talking about. I wanted to stay specifically in a field that I knew and that is wood working. While shopping over the years I saw lots of cabinets, cabinet doors, drawer slides etc, that were deal breakers for me. I was interested in solid units with no fixes needed but the units were always used out of warranty. I offered to make some repairs on a couple of units we looked at but they said they would either get wood works repaired or replaced under warranty and the used units would be sold as is and repaired at he buyers expense. My point is, You say you know your way around much of the workings of an RV, Then I would get some insurance and advertise locally and hang fliers at local businesses as well as the bank. Maybe you could offer inspections for lenders before they let money out on a unit that should be in good order. Anyhow trust me, Ive seen the wood working skills of just having an inverter replaced, the guy couldn't figure out how to make the 3 pieces of back wall in the basement pass thru fit together. I called them and they told me to bring it in and they would try to fix it. My response was thanks but no thanks, I will do it myself. Local private businesses do well around here for winterizing and such. Consider winter storage as add on to your business. Just think about it, take the unit for storage but the renter wants new brakes for the next season or tires replaced before the season begins. You would have all winter to work on it!
