We've always referred to this habit as the herding instinct. On a slow day at the nursery we would have a couple of employees park their cars out front and it never failed to draw in plenty of customers. No one wants to miss out on something, good or perceived, and by gosh we better get in there before someone else does. Seems to be the same in a parking lot.
