One thing that has improved our travels is to ignore that big dollar "come to our state" type stuff and look at the local chamber of commerce web sites. Of course some are really good, and some are not. Many have things (museums, walking tours etc) the state level advertising don't even list compared to the local level. And more than once have called local chamber of commerce and asked about something and asked where is a good place to stay and be referred to a local city park or park grocery store near city hall type thing.
