Ahhhh....we remember the wildfires of 08!
This pic was taken looking East at 8:00 A.M from our pool deck.
That was a very uncomfortable week. - EPenneyExplorerSmoke from fire has historically been a part of California's ecosystem. If we had all been around prior to 1900, smoke from campfires, fire pits, and fireplaces would have been the least of our worries.
The following are excerpts from a report titled: "Prehistoric fire area and emissions from California’s forests, woodlands,
shrublands, and grasslands"
Scott L. Stephens *, Robert E. Martin, Nicholas E. Clinton
Pre 1800, "Skies were likely smoky much of the summer and fall in California." And prior to 1900, "Skies were likely smoky in the summer and fall in California before fire suppression. An eye-witness account of smoke in northern California forests (C.H. Merriam 1898, quoted in Morford, 1993) reported ‘‘Of the hundreds of persons who visit the Pacific slope in California every summer to see the mountains, few see more than the immediate foreground and a haze of smoke which even the strongest glass is unable to penetrate.’’
And a California Indian lady told me the Central Valley was called "Great Smoky Place" by her ancestors.

I think that it is time for the eastern states to file a lawsuit against California and Colorado for not controling their wildfires. Since California has already determined that small wood fires cause climate change, it only follows that wildfires are a MAJOR contributor. Furthermore, prevailing winds blow all that polution east. If California cannot control their wildfires, they should be forced to find a way of preventing the polution from leaving their state. To date, the state of California has not spent a single penny on research or implementation of a controls to prevent their wildfire pollution from moving to other states. If California was on the east coast, the lawsuit would have been filed against the rest of the country years ago.
I LIKE this!!!! ROFL!!!!!!!! - Ski_Pro_3ExplorerCan you just imagine what a single wild fire in California can generate in smoke, and THEY are worried about a few bon fires? Obviously it has NOTHING to do with a bon fire and every thing to do with controlling other people.
But there is a silver lining;
First; California is stripping it's law enforcement in favor of funding their little pet projects like saving lab monkeys and other nonsense. Just because there's a law, doesn't mean there's anyone to enforce it. Call the police to report a property crime (theft, burglary, vandalism) and the operator you call will direct you to a website to fill out the report. An officer isn't going to be dispatched. They are too busy handling violent crime it seems. Add to that, the federal government is forcing California to release, immediately, another 10,000 prisoners (After the state has already released more than 30,000 prisoners before serving their sentence) and you can see, a bonfire report isn't going to make a hill of beans to some local police department.
Second; the press sensationalizes these sorts of things; bonfires, ice cream trucks, etc. It's all 'yesterday's' news if you give it a little time. Look at pot smoking. Go to any California beach where smoking cigarettes is banned and you'll likely catch a wiff of pot. After all, THAT'S medicinal. You can't stop someone with a disability from enjoying the beach you know. They have rights!!
Third; This is actually a big rouse to keep everyone else out of California. We have enough residents to keep our beaches crowded as it is. Several here already say this sort of reporting is why they won't come here on vacation. Personally, I like it, seeing as I live here and get pretty aggravated with the way midwesterners drive; dang near stop in the middle of traffic to take a photo or some crap. - Homer1ExplorerI to was a big bonfire fan. Then we found that my wife had "COPD", we were advised not to be around any kind of dust ie; gravel road, construction projects and open wood fires. We had been RV'g for 40 years, this was a hit in the head.
Most people that have campfires do not think about those that can't tolerate them any more for medical reasons, why should they? But we still loved to RV and camp, so she had to retire into the motorhome and turn on the A/C every evening. She is no longer with us, the COPD took her out. She never once complained about others and thier campfires. I like the campfires to, but not on 90 degree days, or when the wind takes the smoke to some one elses RV. just sayin - 2012ColemanExplorer II

X-1,2,3 - - thank you!
More campsites available for CA folks!.:C
Although the areas involved have nothing to do with campgrounds!.:S
The original "problem" had nothing to do with climate, etc.
There haven't been "bonfires" on any of the beaches in question
in years.
Only fires in designated fire rings.
Anyway, it had everything to do with mega bucks folks who live in Newport Beach - along an area which is very close (steps) to/from the beach - and conversely, steps from their front doors.
The onshore is/was blowing all the smoke from the designated fire rings back into their houses.
Just up the coast in Huntington Beach, it was no problem.
The fire rings are a loooooong distance from any homes, condos, etc.
HB joined the fight to *KEEP* the fire rings.
All parties reached a compromise.
However - there is/was no doubt - if you're downwind of a fire on the
beach - you're going to eat some smoke.
Pretty easy to get out of the "plume" if you're on foot - not so
easy if you live in the plume of several of the rings.
Even *if* AQMD wants to prohibit "bonfires" on the So. CA beaches,
they will face a long and protracted battle (and no doubt lawsuits).
Much ado about nothing..:R
BTW - (X-1,2,3) PLEASE tell your neighbors, and kin - what a terrible
place CA is!..:(
Ask why they left -:h- - and encourage 'em to move back to *your* hometown, USA..:C.:C.
Your efforts are appreciated!

I've been to CA, Drove all over it. and yes. God made it beautiful. But y'all made it crazy. It's like cerial. Full of fruits, and nuts. - DiskDoctrExplorerRIP.
Here lies the memory of a post that was neither political nor made any personal attacks on any members.
It did, simply observe the shear stupidity of the pundits trying to implement the referenced "ban on outdoor campfires" nonsense discussed in this thread. These pundits are external to this forum- or so I thought ? Perhaps they are personal friends of *somebody* ?
Perhaps it was merely deleted out of retribution for telling another poster who ansked that mods will do what they want how they want and answer to no one?
Either way, a moment of silence in observation of the "Mod-o-Deleto" function :h :R Boo! - RoyBExplorer IIJust hang in there I suppose.. The abnormal climates IMO are being caused by the close encounter to the center of the Universe last December. It started causing havoc with our climate three to four years before approaching the center of the universe so I imagine it will take another three to four years for our solar system to walk away from it before things start getting back to normal...
Roy Ken - RaftenExplorerSo some of you have issues with CA to the point of saying you would never visit. Cool, your choice but you are missing some of the best nature has to offer. Keep in mind there was a time we met you at the border and turned you back eastward.
