Sagging Slideout Awnings

Anyone make up a PVC support frame for the awning? I have one 12 foot slide out awning that the wind whips and water ponds on it. The other smaller ones drain ok and the wind does not whip them, as they stay taunt or tight.
I have tried 2 air mattress but the wind will eventually blow them out.
Just wondering how the PVC pipe is. I don't want the wind to shred the awning via beating on the PVC pipe. I think I am going to make up something but just wondered if anyone has any experience with the PVC.
  • Chances are it wasn’t installed with enough spring tension… if you don’t want to adjust it you can try the air wedge…

    air wedge
  • Does the roller tube bow at all? Dometic makes a center support that will take the bow out and keep the center tight- but it only works (I think) on the A&E Deluxe models.
  • I use a one gallon milk bottle with a string attached to the handle. Pitch the weighted line thru the opening then use the cord to pull the bottle to the center of the slide. When getting ready to leave I pull the bottle thru and wrap the cord around the bottle for next time use.
  • I'm not sure it can be tightened any more. It looks fine and tight, just as the others until it gets real windy or rain. I measured it to make up something and the back side by the roof there is 5" between the slide out roof & the awning, and at the front it is 4 1/4", and the slide is 3' wide and 12' long. I think the ponding is because of only 3/4" fall over the 3 feet and it just can't drain fast enough so it ponds.
I'm going to make up something & if it don't work, I'll throw it away.
    PVC pipe is cheap.

I would just re-tighten the loose one and be done with it.
That's what I would do also. I got slide toppers to ease my workload, not add to it by having to put stuff under it and mess with it.
  • Yep, saw where one of mine waz starting to pond up a bit, so made up a t,and pushed it to the middle , oops then had to figure how to retrieve it, works for me. Happy-camping
  • Some people use beach balls, tried that did not like it. So I did rig up a 1/2 pvc pipe, two 90 degree elbows and a rubber tip on the short down legs. It worked just fine. Actually if you can have them rewound it would be better. Just make the down legs long enough the canvas is taught but not so much that water will pond behind the pvc. JUST BE SURE TO REMOVE THEM BEFORE YOU BRING IN THE SLIDE. I used a bright yellow marker tied to a string that hung down so I would be reminded.
  • Have you tried re-tightening the awning? The one on my class C is about as wide as yours and it stays pretty tight, never had a problem with it sagging or whipping. I'm sure there is some way to add tension to it - someone on here can probably tell you how.
