San Diego Passes RV Parking Ban

On July 8, 2013 the San Diego City Counsel passed a sweeping ban on RV parking within the City of San Diego. This ban effects motorhomes, trailers, ATV trailers, boats, and any other "oversized" vehicle. The city backed off on this in 2008 when the new ordinance was not paid for, now through "funny numbers" based revenue from tickets annually the counsel passed the new ordinance. Parking is banned from 2a-6a or at anytime within 50' of an intersection. Residents can obtain a one night permit for a fee to park on their block.

Through sales tax and plates I have paid roughly $15,000 to the state and city, now to be discriminated against. They are perfectly willing to take my money, then ban from parking. With this ban, because I am two houses in from the corner, I can never park in front of my home again.

If you have not heard about this, no surprise, this was done without a call for public debate. Todd Gloria, my city councilmen, should be ashamed of himself.

If you live in San Diego, this will effect you, let your elected representative know.

  • It always bugs me when laws are put into place to control a problem but address the problem tangentially. In this case, the problem is folks parking overnight where they are not wanted. Rather than have an ordinance that bans sleeping overnight in an RV on the street, they ban the RV itself, which is not the real problem. Doing that always misses some of the folks you really wanted to affect, while picking up a bunch of folks you never meant to target in the first place.
  • The way I see it, these laws are passed because people have been taking advantage of the situation and in order to clean up the homeless problem, they need laws to kickem out. I also see stupid laws, or rules, everywhere, that where enacted because of selfish individuals - not the majority.
  • Yet another case of The Freeloader Effect:

Abuses by those who like to call themselves "stealthcampers" have once again led to folks like you getting punished. It's not about you, of course- you're just a homeowner with an RV. But there's no way to get rid of RV squatters without making such blanket rules.

If the poll taken at this link is any indicator, it looks like there's plenty of Public support for the ordinance.

Too bad for responsible RVers like you...
