Savannah and the coast input

We are in the initial stages of planning our annual Sharon's Birthday trip (last week of Feb-1st of March) and are considering flying into Jacksonville, FL and wandering up the coast for 10-14 days. Savannah and Tybee Island for four days has an attraction.

We just wander...no itinerary. So, shopping sure. Maybe some cool historical stuff. No interstates, unless we need to to, to get somewhere.

Last year we did the Gulf Coast from Houston, to Pensacola Fl, with 3 nights in NOLA. Loved it all.

Any thoughts and/or suggestions are welcome.

  • Just outside of Savannah in is the Mighty eighth Air force Museum. Lot of historical WWII, Korean and Viet Nam era aircraft. It is in Pooler just off I-95.
  • Just to clarify, not camping this time. We'll fly into wherever, rent a car and do it that way. No question, I'd rather be in the Rv but that is a ton of miles for a two week look-see. I'll pretend I am Anthony Bordain.

I assume if you wish to wander up the coast you will be taking US-17/GA-25 (Which keeps winding around over and under I-95)

I can only make a couple of suggestions,, As you come through DARIEN, GA if it happpens to be lunch time,, Billy's BBQ (Corner of US-17 and GA-251, directly across from Bi-Lo) best brisket I have ever had.

NOTE: if you want a beer with your lunch, he can not sell it. But Bi-Lo does, and the back side of the register reciept gets you half off on the 2nd dinner at Billy's. Lunch is about 8 bucks a pop.

Evening meal B&J's (A bit farther south, almost directly across from where I go to Church) will be on your left.

If it's late and you want a parking spot for the night.

Hang the left on 251, 4 miles to Cathead Creek, I'm on site 12
  • Too bad you're not coming through the area a little later in the Spring. Hertz offers rental cars for $5-$7.50 a day one way to get their huge Florida Winter fleet out of the area.

We flew into Orlando, visited Disneyworld and headed north through Savannah, Charleston, Myrtle Beach--ending up in Washington, DC

We especially enjoyed Charleston but found Savannah and Tybee Island to be a little too quiet for our tastes.
  • I also find St. Augustine and Savannah excellent choices. If you desire both cities have trolley systems that you can take. They are guided tours with explanations at every stop. If you get off and wander some of the sights at a stop, do that then go back to the stop and get back on the next trolley and keep going. They have all day passes. If you go to one and then when you get to the next city take the same trolley line and you will get a discount on the second one. Very enjoyable way to see both cities and saves some of the walking. In Savannah make sure to go down to the street right along the river. Good Luck and Have Fun.
  • We just returned from Tybee Island- stayed at this rental- family get together of me and my wife, my sister and BIL, and Dad. Great rental- owner, Dan, is very, very nice. Put up a Christmas tree for us, and brought a sausage pie for Christmas morning.

We didn't do much besides the Light House (right out the front door), walks on the beach, and visiting, but there is tons to do.
  • Savanah is awesome. We stayed in a B&B years ago and had a blast. It's a beautiful city to just walk around, we did some tours, and hit Tybee Island. You won't be disappointed.
