The sound of a REAL shotgun racking a shell is a huge deterrent. I carry a 12 gauge shotgun and a box of shells for two reasons. This is the first of those reasons.
The psychological impact of you racking a shotgun will drive most perps away. If it does not, then the shotgun will be useful for the second reason.
I have never felt the need to do this, but I have it just in case something like you describe happens. It is far better to have it and not need it, then it is to not have it and need it.
