I would guess as soon as your dog started barking, the guest figured someone was home and took off. Quite the fool to try and enter your rig knowing you were home.
we had that happen in a st. Louis hotel room many years ago. I was asleep, wife was awake watching TV. all of a sudden she elbows me in the ribs which wakens me. she puts a finger to her lips and points towards the window. just then an arm reaches in, parts the curtains and a leg starts to slip through the now removed window.
I yelled, the arm and leg disappeared and i get a glimpse of a face. I grab the phone and notify the front desk. we had stayed at this particular place...a Best Western next to Stan Musial's restaurant in Forest Park...many times and I knew that there was only one way in and out for a vehicle. the duty manager quickly blocks the entrance with his car and calls 9-1-1. meantime I am up, dressed and calming the wife.
police arrive and apprehend two suspects...a male who was working the other side of the motel with a set of keys and a female who I was able to identify as the owner of the arm and leg. had the mgr not blocked the drive they may not have been caught. the occupant of the room where the male had been caught going thru the sleeping occupant's trousers and wallet declined to get involved. we did. mgr thanked us the next morning while we were in the motel coffee shop but didn't comp the room or breakfast.
that was the last time we ever stayed in a motel that had outside access to rooms. anytime we use a motel it must have inside access only. the wife had nightmares about that incident for several years and would wake me in a panic several times a year. i'd have to turn on every light in the house before she would calm down.
