The sound of a REAL shotgun racking a shell is a huge deterrent. I carry a 12 gauge shotgun and a box of shells for two reasons. This is the first of those reasons.
The psychological impact of you racking a shotgun will drive most perps away. If it does not, then the shotgun will be useful for the second reason.
I have never felt the need to do this, but I have it just in case something like you describe happens. It is far better to have it and not need it, then it is to not have it and need it.
Good luck!
Good luck - is right.
Here's the "real life" problem with the above.
True "racking" story:
An LEO friend and his partner got a call for a possible break-in at a warehouse.
They found a side door unlocked. Interior completely dark.
One had the shotgun, and they each stepped inside and immediately to either side of the door, backs to the wall - waiting for their eyes to adjust to the darkness....not wanting to shine flashlights just yet.
Cop with the shotgun "racked" a round - and waited to hear any results - the "mean business" sound might produce..
Oh-oh.....similar sound from an opposing area of the warehouse!
Fortunately, both pairs of cops started verbally identifying themselves at that point.
For some reason neither knew the other/s were there.
IMO - lots of other noise for boondock RVing would be first choice..;)
