I read these boon-docking threads with interest. I've (and later in life a WE) been boon-docking for over fifty years in most states in the USA, and a lot of Canada. Tenting, then a Van, then and still in a truck camper. We never had any kind of incident in all that time, but once.
We don't boon-dock much any more - as we don't want to go anywhere we can walk out of, and walking out is getting a bit tougher as age takes its toll. But, we were always prepared, and always observant anywhere we went.
Course, years ago, thing in the wilderness areas of this country were generally safer then too. Although, I don't doubt the safety, generally, anywhere even now if you research a bit, ask, and know the area ... just take some care, some planning, and be prepared.
The once: In a rest stop one time, near St Louis, we got a knock on the door about 2PM, and asked for money and help by a "Shakey Looking" individual, broke down and no gas he said. We didn't believe it, he knocked on a couple other vehicles, then got into a Ford Explorer and took off (Hmmmm, out of gas?)
Will say one thing tho -- we do get lots of scratching and shaking over the years -- most times a good set of lights will show us a raccoon, a skunk, or some such critter that seems about six times bigger in the dark nights than in the daylight. :) :)
