Brian. they use them around here to get to work, and they do use them in 55 mph zones. Very often you will see 15 or so cars lined up behind one on 321 waiting for a chance to pass. Not too bright.
The small motorcycle idea might be a good alternative. But of course would require a motorcycle endorsement, and insurance. And I have seen some scooters that can keep up with traffic. Might look at them. I wouldn't mind having one of those to ride to work.
BTW. In our town, you can ride golf carts on the city streets, once you get a permit. But I wouldn't ride one of them on 321 either. But not a lot of difference really.
