Sealant For Vertical Surfaces

I need to run a small wire through the side wall of my TT. What is the best way to seal around the wire? I had planned on using a Silicone sealant but I think I have read on this forum that silicone is not good for some reason. What should I use? Thanks for any advice.
  • Silicone is not the thing you want on your rig, go with Dicor non sag for vertical surfaces.

  • I use silicon without reservation on my fifth wheel but not on the rubber roof.

Anyhow Dicor makes a non self leveling sealant that will suit your needs.
  • Geocell Proflex.

The reason NO silicone is 'silicone won't even stick to itself until all remnants have been removed and a silicone remover/solvent has been used to get rid of the residue left behind and then something used to get rid of remover/solvent'
  • I refuse to get into a whizzing contest about silicon.

The stuff i use does stick to itself and I dare say that it will still be here when I am gone.

If that stuff is useless, I wonder why it takes up so much space in the caulk section.

Oh well, each to his own so I did mention the option of using Dicor. It does have a camper on the cover if I remember correctly and I have used it also.
  • The Tripolymer caulks from Geocel like ProFlex RV and the single polymer caulks that are urethane based are far superior to silicone or acrylic caulk for vehicles. Silicone does offer good sealing when in compression between two surfaces like oil pans and any surfaces drawn together by fasteners. It degrades quickly from UV and does not have much tensile strength.
  • When I cracked open my 1st tube of ProFlex it was the thickest, stickiest (nastiest) caulk I've ever used. This is my first time using it, but after applying I can't imagine it not lasting forever.

I agree. I use silicon on my Outback. That is what is on there from the factory and that is what I was told to use when I asked Keystone Tech Services. The roof is a different story though.

  • ProFlex is what the manufacturers use and recommend. Naptha or Klean Strip Industrial Maintenance Coating Thinner (sold by Home Depot and others) are good for pre cleaning the area where the old sealant has been applied and for cleaning up after you put new sealant on your RV.
