Sealing Shower Walls

19' Terry TT

Lets just say I'm not impressed with the prior owner's ability to fix stuff. I'm not going anywhere near the shower until it is properly and correctly sealed.

throughout the bathroom, there are hundreds of short strips of some sort of corner molding, 3-6" long. I have not pulled a piece out yet, but what I see is two 90° legs, about 3/8" long each and pressed into the corners. Also, in most of the wet area in the corners of the shower is duct tape. Have not pulled that off either.

I'm going to make an assumption here the shower is flat {fiberglass?} panels with good edges.

What is the most best way to seal the corners in the shower?

These same short pieces of corner molding were also installed throughout the trailer. While I'm most concerned with the shower, longer term it would be nice to change this ugly******out of the rest of the walls.

  • thank you for all the help!

The short segments of corner molding probably was original equipment that dry rotted, shrank, and broke in pieces.

As best I could see, there was zero wood rot behind the panels. I have not been able to check underneath.

Got the panels cleaned up with acetone and pulled all the chunks out. Laid Bathroom RTV down and it looks great.
  • Have you looked at the floor supports under the shower/tub. It sounds like the prior owner had a leak and was trying to fix it. Mildew and wood rot under the shower may add to your problem. You may need more than a seam sealer.
  • I recommend this with caution for two reasons...first, it would be best for me to see a photo of what you are actually describing before recommending a product and secondly, this particular product may or may not be the best for your job. It is very strong and for the most part...permanent! Very difficult to remove once cured. It does, however, stop seam leaks. Can be used under the waterline in marine applications. 3M 5200. 3M use to offer the 4200 which is similar but not so permanent! I couldn't find it anymore.
  • What color is the stall? White? Ivory, Yellowish etc?

I have used Weiman Products Almond Tub and Floor Caulk Strip from Lowes with success

    http://www.lowes.com/Search=bath+caulk?storeId=10151&langId=-1&catalogId=10051&N=0&newSearch=true&Ntt=bath+caulk
  • Ugh - you may be looking at a real mess.
I used a good quality caulk.

Personally, I'd just walk the plumbing and bathroom accessories aisles in Home Depot and pick up a lot of stuff.

First, however, I'd be pulling stuff down. If it's bad under there, don't cover it up.
