shower walls

I have a coachman and just bought it used. I noticed that the shower walls are not flush with the walls. They have a bowed effect around all 3 walls. Will pop rivets, and sealant fix the problem? If not what do I need to do? Where is a place to buy rivets for this type of job?
  • Maybe replacing the shower would be an option. Sometimes they put the cheapest thing they can find into them, that meets specs. It is probably a standard spec as to measurements. Not sure how well fastened in it. A heavier made unit perhaps with different fixtures, door etc If you're going to keep the RV for a long time it might be considered.
  • So many great reply's. I think the space between the shower wall and motor home wall might be around 1/8" Not a large gap. Could I just use some type of caulking and molding around the top?
  • Shower walls are installed few ways
    1. They all have 2 sided tape to hold to the wall panels
    2. Some use screws along the side edges and then silicone the edge
    3. Some use plastic expandable rivets (color matched) and drill 3/16 holes at various places in the flat wall and edges to hold the panels secure.
    4. I would use the color matched plastic rivets to hold your walls in place. Just put a dab of silicone in the hole before installing the rivets to seal good. Doug
  • Is it falling apart or is it just cosmetic to you? Mine is loose to the walls and has been since I bought it new. It is fastened at the top and sits in the base and does not leak. If you need to worry about it they do make a push pin but there is really no wall behind the fiberglass and very few studs. I for one would do nothing. Make a hole and rivet it ? too what? then the jiggeling that comes with travel will expand the hole and you will get water leak. Leave it alone.
  • It MAY be that someone has caulked the bottom edge of the shower surround which traps condensation behind the panel and can cause all SORTS of problems. Removing the surround to check for damage seems like a good idea but when it (or a new one) is installed be sure to NOT seal around the joint with the tub. Perfectly fine to caulk all other sides of the surround, just not the bottom. This is often one of the FIRST things a new owner might do, thinking they are protecting their new investment.
    Good luck / Skip
  • How difficult would it be to remove the walls for inspection ? I would want to know what is going on behind the wall and what has possibly failed in the original installation. I think it would be preferred to NOT have screws , rivets or whatever puncturing the wall surface as you are just adding potential leak paths. Think about it the OEM didn't use them why should you ? But it's your camper so do what you feel comfortable with and within your skillset. Good luck.
  • Old-Biscuit, YES THEY DO have fasteners into the wall!!!!!

Our present trailer and our last trailer had full surrounds and had push pins through the surround and into the trailer wall, as do many I have seen. There were no push-pins into the bottom of the surround where it meets the pan. There is some type of double sided tape or such, since I can push on the surround and it will stick to the pan but will release after some time.

    The walls do have penetration!!!
  • Shower walls/surrounds have a lip around sides and top that is used to secure to wall studs and then trim goes over the area.

NO screws, nails, pop rivets or any other type of fastener goes thru the 'wall' area of shower/surrounds as that would create holes and water intrusion.

It would help if you could post up some pictures.
  • Not so much a failure as unfinished work. The shower walls just need to be secured to the walls and then a sealant or calking applied around the edges. I just don't know what to use or where to begin shopping.
