Every time we leave to go on a camping trip we always get down the road and wonder if we closed our garage door. One time we were over 100 miles from home and my wife said I do not think I closed the garage door...OOPS......my wife was able to call a neighbor that was home and she reported nope wide open......at least we were able to give her the code to close it. So when I saw that Sears sells a kit that attaches to the garage door that will let you open and close the garage door from a smart phone plus it will tell you how long it has been open....Now my question is has any one tried this if so is there a monthly user fee?.....I have tried other sources to answer my question....

We disable our garage door openers (they have a function especially for this) so we're sure they're closed when we leave for a trip. Our doors also have steel dead bolts. Nobody's getting in that way at least. ;)

The Garage Butler is one of the best buys we have made for our stick and brick house. We leave ours set on 10 minutes so if DW says "I forgot to close the garage door," I answer "That's OK, it will close in 10 minutes anyway."Great peace of mind.When we moved 4 years ago, we took the Garage Butler down before listing the house because we didn't want to risk the buyers listing it in the contract to stay with the house.

It works great! It tells you how long the door has been opened or closed. I can't tell you how many times I have circled around after leaving the house to see if I closed the door. Not anymore!Burch

Why not just add 'close garage door' to your checklist before leaving with the RV. :)

all powered grage door opners have this abilty to not be opened while you are away on a trip.
even the very old units.

it is the power plug. just unug the unit and it will not open.
but yes use a bolt or two to lock the door down as there is a way to by-pass any auto door opner.

Yep,I guess you're right. All of us who have on occassion forgotten things should just give up on life. I'll go crawl in my assisted living hole somewhere and never be heard from again....

This thread reminds me of a former GM president who when introduced to the first import car that could talk was unimpressed. When he opened the door, the car said "the door is ajar". He said "I know, I opened it." Maybe we shouldn't be driving if we can't remember to close the door when we leave home?:). People with teenagers still at home are exempt.

I've had the assure link garage door opener for a while now. It's great and works as stated.And like the previous poster, I have never had to pay for the service and don't know where i would pay if I had to.. no link for it anywhere..

There are some home automation systems out there now (Home security systems) that DO allow you to turn on lights, lock doors and such remotely from a smart phone... Alas, can not assist you with their names.. Watch Television commercials.

I added this to my existing garage door opener......->Click Here<-

I also have a webcam in my garage that allows me to "look and see" if my garage door is open or closed.......

My kids on occasion come home from school and have forgotten to take their house key with them.....I can remotely open the garage door to allow them access to the house.........

Just this week I added the "Nest" wifi enabled thermostat......I can now monitor the temp inside our house and on the return home from a trip I can turn on the A/C a couple of hours before arriving home........

I've had this unit for about a year and a half. It's not an add on, you have to buy their (Sears Craftsman) opener that has the AssureLink capability installed.
The manual stated that after one year, there would be a charge for access (I think $20), but I've never seen anything about charges since.
You can pull it up on your smart phone, and see how long your door has been closed or open. You can also open or close it from your phone. Another thing I like about this unit is that you can program the door to automatically close after a certain amount of time. I have mine set where it will close if no one has tripped the light beam after 30 minutes.

EDIT: I must correct myself. Their website now says that any Craftsman opener made after 2009 can be upgraded to accept the Assurelink. That wasn't available when I bought mine.
