Setting up 2014 Honda CR-V AWD for towing - bumper removal?

We purchased a 2014 CR-V AWD to use as a tow'd vehicle after our Exploder suddenly dropped its tranny.

We have a Blue Ox tow bar on our motorhome and looking at how to set up the base plate and wiring, it says that the bumper of the CR-V needs to be removed and not replaced (if I'm reading right).

My question to anyone is currently towing a CR-V: Is this correct? The bumper stays off?

Is it the same with all tow bars or just Blue Ox?

Helpful replies, and photos if possible, will be greatly appreciated!

  • It is the same on the Roadmaster baseplate. I took the "bumper" to the Honda dealer and gave it to them rather than throw it away.
  • Ahhhh! Got it. Thanks for the info. I found the suggested video very helpful, too. And there's also one for the wiring.
  • What it is considering and is calling a bumper is inside the Shroud of the decorated bumper. It bolts to the frame member that and has to be removed to mount the base plate. The base plate has a built in bumper that takes the place of the one removed. You then put the "Shroud or decorated facia back on to retain the original look of the front of the Honda. The square tubing of the base plate are then visible through the grill opening, at least they are with the roadmaster base plate. You should save the bumper and reinstall it if you ever remove the base plate
  • I don't think you are reading it correctly. Check out the install video on this page at etrailer.com. They state and clearly show that the bumper is put back on after the base plate is installed.
