Pointing out the obvious that access into Estes Park will be closed or severely limited even by next week. Yes, just an assumption but probably a reality based upon the damage and road destruction.
If you are headed west and are on I70, you should not have any issues getting up into the CO mountains. A nice area to go would be near Leadville around Turquoise Lake. Would be a nice central location to see a lot of the high country on day trips.
I have also heard that some areas around the 10k ft level where the aspens are turning is happening. Area I heard that happening was near Vail...Leadville is not too far from Vail so wouldn't be surprised to know aspens near Leadville are turning too.
Make sure you are packing for very cool evening/morning weather.
