Boulder, Colorado

We are looking for a nicer campground with some amenities near the Boulder, Colorado area. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Look in Longmont - County Fairgrounds - https://www.bouldercounty.org/open-space/fairgrounds/campground/ - St Vrain State Park -http://cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/parks/StVrain/Pages/Camping.aspx

Then a little further up the Road in Lyons - http://www.townoflyons.com/349/LaVern-M-Johnson-Park

Or south in Golden - https://www.cityofgolden.net/play/recreation-attractions/clear-creek-rv-park/

As you can see nothing in Boulder - Dirt is just TOO Expensive, starting to get crazy in the area with housing prices.

Hope this is of some help,
  • If you are looking for a spot for this Summer, good luck! We are going to the Denver area end of July. We started looking for a campsite in January and we had difficulty as the spots we considered first were already reserved. We ended up getting a campsite at Chatfield State Park. It was about the only place left. We figured we could bedroom park there and use it as a base camp to visit the other places we really wanted to go to.

If you are looking for a site for this Summer, I suggest you just Google search "Campgrounds, Denver, CO" and just start searching their web sites and making calls. Good luck!
  • If you can get by with just electric sites, we loved Golden Gate State Park just North of Golden CO. Very scenic at 9000 ft elevation, with great bath houses and laundry facilities. I remember paying an annual pass fee as well but we stayed in several state parks that year in Colorado. We made the mistake of following the directions on the website which was a white knuckle experience. You would want to approach from the West entrance, rt 119 off I-70 to rt 72
  • Try Bear lake park in Morrison, its a nice little park by red rocks. Not to far from Golden.

    THIS ^^^^^

Golden Gate Canyon SP is a wonderful place to stay. Facilities are always clean and the staff very helpful. And you do NOT want to go in from the east side off CO 72. West side is much better. To get there, go through Denver on I-70 toward Golden and take the US 6 exit in Golden. Follow the signs for US 6 until it intersects with CO 119. Take that up to Black Hawk and go past Black Hawk for several miles to Gap Road/County Rd 2. That will take you right to Reverend's Ridge Campground, which is not far off CO 119.

Housing in Boulder is obscene. In Boulder city, the average house price has topped $1million; in Boulder County, $700K+. Hence no RV parks or CGs with amenities. There ARE some USFS CGs with no hookups between Nederland and Black Hawk, as well as north between Nederland and Estes Park. They are on the edge of the Indian Peaks Wilderness area and definitely worth considering if you get by without amenities.

Not to disagree - as Golden Gate State Park is a great place to go - BUT - it is every bit of an Hour Plus to Boulder.

    So keep that in Mind,

This is the only State Park campground near Boulder that is actually in the mountains. The others, like St. Vrain, Boyd Lake, Chatfield, and Cherry Creek, are on the plains. Which one you select really depends on whether you want to be in the mountains and whether you are staying long enough that you must have a FHU site (Golden Gate SP has none, just electric).

If you have a toad, you can get to Boulder by going north from the campground to CO 72 (Coal Creek Canyon) and then CO 93 to Boulder. It is shorter and faster than going back to CO 119 or down to Golden on Golden Gate Canyon Road to get to 93.
  • St Vrain has been our choice for the Boulder area for many years. The W/E loops are much nicer than the FHU loops. Longmont Boulder County Fairgrounds is a little closer but still 20 minutes or so from Boulder.
  • As our Kids live just south of Boulder We have visited all and trust me Golden Gate is over 60 minutes in a Good Sports Car, with a good driver. :-)

Last option could be a Wal*Mart if only for a day or so.

    Done that too.

People need to understand that 35 miles into the Mountains is not Close. One truck or School Bus and it can be 90 minutes. (been there done that)

    JMHO,

ps - Oh how I Love Colorado!
  • If you don't mind going a bit further north, both Carter Lake and Flatirons Reservoir are nice spots. They are ran by Larimer County. Probably an hour or so to Boulder.

But yes otherwise, the closest spot I can think of is St. Vrain. It's next to I-25 so keep that in mind.
