Shackle flip when tires removed

Thought I would share so if anyone else ever had this issue.
Bought a new (used) horse trailer with living quarters. Tires were out of balance and bounced us home for 500 miles.
Next day, I took the tires off and took them to my local shop for balancing.
Two weeks later we were getting bounced again. ONE tire had several flat spots. Turned out that the brake for that particular tire was locking up. Took the brake drum off and adjusted the shoes. Still locking up.
Then, upon heading to the state park 10 miles away to dump tanks, that tire was free spinning when I was at a stop.
To shorten the story, turns out that when I had all 4 tires off for balancing, 1 shackle got flipped. So when the brakes were engaged, there was little to no resistance to keep that one wheel from locking up and dragging the tire.
Not too expensive of a lesson. Just on new tire.

How does a shackle get flipped when you remove a tire?

By jacking from under the equalizer or on tha spring. I jacked from the equalizer before and shifted the shackle...oops
  • It can happen if you jack your trailer by the frame as I did. Really throws out the axle alignment. I also had on that flipped on my boat trailer and all I can attribute it to is a tight turn I had to make pulling out of a lot, running my trailer tires over the curb. Didn't notice it until my tire began to wear unevenly. Really a booger to get back in place.
