Sheared Lugs
New to this forum. It is winter but in a few months it will be time to go get the camper out of storage. My last camping outing was ended abruptly and I can't stop thinking about it. I was towing it, had about a 10 mph crosswind pushing on the driver side. Met a semi coming the other way. The camper leaned as the semi went by. But what was odd was that it it didn't come back. So pulled off to the side of the road figuring I had a flat tire. Nope, come to find out that all of the lugs sheared off of one tire and the tire went sailing into the river I just went by.
Camper was still under the first year warranty. But of course Forest River fought me for two months before they finally cut me a check for something like $60 of the $300 it took to fix everything.
Anyway my question is has anybody else seen lugs on a camper shear off? I check the torque on my lugs around 4 times a season - so I have hard time believing that it was a loose tire. I know that the camper is close to the axles maximum rating but nearly every camper is set up that way these days. Bought a second hub assembly - but am still nervous to pull it anywhere significant.
