- mboppExplorerTowing with my F250 6.2, I use tow-haul but lock out 6th gear because it hunts too much.
- LwiddisExplorer IICheck your manufacturer’s owner manual for instructions on hills.

Greetings all. New tow-er here.
Does anyone have a link to some comprehensive yet easy to understand directions for manual shifting an automatic when towing.
I mean, im guessing that's why we have "L" option
Thanks in advance.
Link to your glove box, the information is in there in the form of an owners manual. We have no idea what tow vehicle or trailer is being used. - JIMNLINExplorer IIIdepends on the brand of the vehicle.....and which tranny. A heavier tranny in 3/4 ton diesel trucks and up work pretty good in auto mode.
Smaller vehicle like my wifes '16 1500 chevy 5.3 6 speed auto tranny I can do a hell of a better job of up and down shifting/down hill braking than the computer. - dodge_guyExplorer IIPut it in D and Tow Haul. On my V-10 Excursion I only had the 4 speed auto with no Tow Haul. With that I had to manually shift it down in the mountains when going down hill.
Now with my 12 MH with the V-10 and 5 speed with Tow Haul I just leave it in D. I tried manually shifting it but the trans knows better! - midnightsadieExplorer IIlet the tranny do its job, after all it knows better.
- GDS-3950BHExplorerNow, Cole, when you shift the gear and that little needle on the tach goes into the red and reads 9000 RPMs, that's BAD.
- MFLNomad IIWelcome to the forum. You don't say what tow vehicle you have. When asking a question about your vehicle, a complete description of it would help to get more accurate answers.
Jerry - Radioflyer99ExplorerPut it in D with the tow mode on. Let er rip
- 2112Explorer IIThe 'L' is for going up and down steep grades at very slow speeds. Put it in 'D' and let the transmission do its job. Engage the tow/haul if you have it.
Depending on your vehicle, you may be able to lock out the highest gear if the transmission is 'searching' going down the highway.
