Short or Long Tow Bar?

Flat towing a Samurai with a 25' Phoenix Cruiser.

I know backing up isn't an option but going forward how much difference does the length of a tow bar make if any?

I have two of the standard, 5000 lb., $100, V type. One is a foot shorter than the other. The longer one is a Reese and the other a Haul Master.

I can't imagine that foot making a difference but asking in case I'm missing something.

  • It might make a difference when turning sharp, where a short unit may allow the front bumper to contact the back of the motorhome and the longer one not.
I think a longer one would tow better but you probably couldn't tell.
  • I have two towbars; a Roadmaster Stowmaster telescoping one, and one of the fixed arm adjustable width (by Reese, I think).
I notice no difference in using them, although the Stowmaster is longer than the Reese.
I use the fixed arm unit (5000 lb. capacity) on Jeeps, and the Stowmaster (6000 lb. capacity) on a Dodge Ram 1500.
    They both work quite well.
