"But I don't think it's a good investment"
RVing, RVs, RV stuff etc. are totally not a good investment just as are buying shares in an older NYC bridge near Brooklyn. The question is not good "investing" but rather what will make RVing more fun? An adequate solar system takes the generation of electricity out of the equation of stuff you need to do daily...fill the batteries...on most days.
If Gjac wants to run down his/her batteries to 50% before recharging that's up to him/her. Me? Solar takes care of bringing them to 100% most days before noon and usually from 70% or more. I check..it works.
Skimp on local TV news and radio? Lights? To save battery power? Not me. I like learning about the small towns I frequent and seeing/reading at night. During daylight running either one costs no amps with solar hard at work.
