In the NE were I live and camp it is heavily forested, solar would be of no use to me, sun does not penetrate the forest. I suspect in the NW where the OP will camp for several long week ends a year it would be the same situation. I don't camp to watch TV or listen to the radio or play on my computer I can do that at home. On rare occasions where I stay 7 days in one spot and reach 50% SOC I'm not worried about hurting the batteries.
"But I don't think it's a good investment"
RVing, RVs, RV stuff etc. are totally not a good investment just as are buying shares in an older NYC bridge near Brooklyn. The question is not good "investing" but rather what will make RVing more fun? An adequate solar system takes the generation of electricity out of the equation of stuff you need to do daily...fill the batteries...on most days.
If Gjac wants to run down his/her batteries to 50% before recharging that's up to him/her. Me? Solar takes care of bringing them to 100% most days before noon and usually from 70% or more. I check..it works.
Skimp on local TV news and radio? Lights? To save battery power? Not me. I like learning about the small towns I frequent and seeing/reading at night. During daylight running either one costs no amps with solar hard at work.
