SkyMed vs GS Travel Assitance

I was wondering if anyone has any of the above carriers, and which one is the best. I realize that the one offered by SkyMed cost more, but does it offer more?
  • With all the horror stories with anything Camping World and Good Sam, why would anyone even think about using Good Sam with something that could be life threatening?
  • disagree with downtheavenue but read the fine print if you really want a plan.

personally they are a waste of money.
  • If someone feels so negatively about GS/CW, why would they be looking at this forum>
  • Similar program offered at no additional cost with your membership in FMCA... ST
  • Read the details of both plans. SkyMed likely offers more than one plan. Which one covers the specific things of concern to you? For a single instance, can you pay out of pocket? We sometimes pay way too much to insure ourselves against things we can actually handle.

The times I worked overseas, we used different plans for medical care and medical evacuation. None were either SkyMed or GoodSams, what we were looking for in each instance was on the ground Western-standard minor and emergency medical care, evacuation, and handling arrangements for evacuation.

I travel globally, and I usually buy per-trip emergency medical care (insurance and case management) rather than try to cover myself with an annual medical travel insurance plan. For travel in the U.S. most of what is offered is already covered by primary insurers. So look at that also, if thinking to buy, since travel plans make themselves secondary, pay only if nobody else pays; maybe.

Case management is more important than the insurance coverage part of the program, my opinion. Money is just money, it comes from somewhere eventually or maybe it just never gets paid (common in the world of medical billing). Someone staying on top of getting the care you need, when you need it, has priority when choosing a medical plan for travel. Advocate or ombudsman.
