Yes, I think they're very worth while. They do provide some shade, but mainly they keep the rain off of the slide.
Think about this if there's no topper. You have one or two slides in the front. It's raining out and it's time to leave, you pull in the slides, raise the jacks, do everything else and go to drive off. As you're making the turn out of your space, you tap the brakes.
Now where does the water go that was sitting on top of the slide you retracted because you didn't have a topper - remember the slide is now retracted inside of the RV. If you're in a Class A MH, the slides will be right behind the front seats. If you're going forward, the water on top of the slides is going to go right down the necks of the passenger and driver.
Been there, done that.
If you're backing out of your space, and tap the brakes, the water will go the other direction - but still inside of the MH.
If you don't have toppers, you have to leave the slides out, raise the jacks, then move the MH, TT, 5th, or whatever back and forth to get the water off before bringing the slides in with the water still on top of them. Some Class A's might not move with the slides out so you're stuck hoping the water will drain off of the top when you raise the jacks placing the MH into an unleveled position.
The toppers are well worth it.
