And to keep leaves, sap, and debris off the top. Retracting the slide with junk on the slide top will abrade the rubber seal and after a while will not be waterproof open or closed. - TrackrigExplorer II
- SteeljagExplorerMore pros than cons! Good investment, and in five years have had ZERO issues with it!
- korbeExplorerI appreciate the awning that allows me to get in the shade, but a slide out topper would only be a maintenance item.
- TrackrigExplorer IIYes, I think they're very worth while. They do provide some shade, but mainly they keep the rain off of the slide.
Think about this if there's no topper. You have one or two slides in the front. It's raining out and it's time to leave, you pull in the slides, raise the jacks, do everything else and go to drive off. As you're making the turn out of your space, you tap the brakes.
Now where does the water go that was sitting on top of the slide you retracted because you didn't have a topper - remember the slide is now retracted inside of the RV. If you're in a Class A MH, the slides will be right behind the front seats. If you're going forward, the water on top of the slides is going to go right down the necks of the passenger and driver.
Been there, done that.
If you're backing out of your space, and tap the brakes, the water will go the other direction - but still inside of the MH.
If you don't have toppers, you have to leave the slides out, raise the jacks, then move the MH, TT, 5th, or whatever back and forth to get the water off before bringing the slides in with the water still on top of them. Some Class A's might not move with the slides out so you're stuck hoping the water will drain off of the top when you raise the jacks placing the MH into an unleveled position.
The toppers are well worth it.
Bill - Two_HandsExplorerWe would not be without slide toppers.
- stickdogExplorerWe're fulltimers. Our slightly used fifthwheel did not come with slide out toppers after five years use I wish we had them just to keep the rain off.
- Anmacc2ExplorerMine has too little space between the topper and the slide out. Also, not enough pitch. Check yours before deciding.
- GMandJMExplorerPro: Keeps leaves and limbs off the slide roof
Con: They sag and and rain water pools in them; It's harder to clean the slide roof when it gets dusty.
(Still would rather have them than not) - Chuck_thehammerExplorerI got my trailer used and it has a topper? 1 slide.
keeps dirt/leaves/branches off and helps keep it dry at the seals...
and keeps the Sun off of it...
as the couch and dinette are on the slide.
my opinion.
