Slide Seals

I had the slide leak once while it was closed in my driveway. Hasn't leaked on camping trips that included lots of rain. Dealer looked it over thoroughly and added some caulking (to make me happy I think...it's under warranty). He said the seal could have folded or crinkled when I closed the slide. I thought he said the top seal would fold in toward the inside of the camper. I watched from the top outside as my wife closed it this time and a portion, say about two feet tried to fold in but the rest stayed out pointing to the outside. I straightened the seal out and checked the side ones too. No leaks.

So I guess the question is which way should the seal face? Thanks

  • I went to my dealer yesterday and spoke with them about this. They confirmed that the top wipe should go with the direction of the slide as ktmrfs stated. Seems it is common when a unit sits in the lot with the slide extended for display the wipe takes a set in that position. They use some self adhesive rubber molding they place lengthwise on the top of the slide that runs parallel with the wipe. As the slide goes out the wipe catches on the molding which gently starts the wipe in the right direction and friction with the slide does the rest. Closing the slide reverses the process. They gave me a piece about two foot long which I cut into three pieces which I spread out evenly to the top of the slide. It worked, but I'm going to get about three more feet. The farther the wipe was from the new molding the wipe the less it (the wipe) wanted to cooperate.

I have same question. Are the seals or wipers supposed to face out or in?
Are they supposed to flip when the slide goes in?

they are basically a "slide wiper" like a windshield wiper. Tasks is to help wipe water off the slide sides and top when you retract. In theory they should face "out" with the slide out, and "in" with the slide in, but not sure how important that is, it doesn't provide the water protection. The bulb seal insde the trailer does that with the slide out, and the bulb seal on the slide frame does that with the slide in.

  • I am having the same issue, I hope someone knows the answer.
  • Ok. I stand corrected. Didn't know the correct terminology. So should the wipers point out way from the camper?
  • What you are referring to is the slide wiper, not the seal. The slide seals are on the perimeter of the slide-inside & out to seal when slide is in or out. Look at the perimeter and you'll see.
