I have a 2013, Dodge Ram, 5.7 Hemi. Long bed, crew cab. My fifth wheel is 7,180 pounds loaded, CAT scale figures. Tows great. All my weights are under truck specs.
I had a 2008 Dodge 2500 back in 2008, quad cab, short bed and missed the back window by about 2". Dented the truck. Next truck was a slider hitch, short bed,
And used the slider, pin box hit tailgate in backing up and did some damage.
Depending on your anticipated weights and the length of the short bed, it can be done. Very carefully.
