Saw the vids from Elliott City. Scary awesome.
I know a little about heavy rainstorms. The day we were moving into the first house we bought in Columbus, OH, it rained. 6 inches in a little over 3 hours. The house was on the side of what passes for a hill in Columbus, and I'm dragging in with a truck load of our stuff. I pull in the driveway, which is crossways on the hill, and there is this river running through the back yard, in one side of the garage and out the other and lapping at the basement windows. I don't know how much rain there's been yet, just that it has been raining fairly hard, and seeing that, I'm thinking "oh, my, god, what have I just bought?"
Next door neighbor steps out on his porch to say hi and seeing me standing there in awe, looks back and says, "I've lived here for 40 years, and I've never seen it do that!"
Turned out that a major city storm sewer just up the hill had clogged and then ruptured.
But seeing the water pouring down Elliott City's main street sent shivers up my spine.
