So many keys!

Sorry for all of the newbie questions, haha, I've done tons of research but still get stumped by a few little things.

When I bought my used rig, it came with a key ring FULL of keys...

-The key to start the engine
-Two other "bigger" keys. These open the door.
-a CH701 key
-3 other little keys similar in size to the CH701 key

I initially assumed the CH701 key was for the storage bays, but it's not. One of the keys for the door works in those. Is this normal?

So now I'm stumped. I have four keys, and I don't know what any of them do. I think one is to access the engine. Other than that I have no idea. I suspect that two of them may not even be related to the RV since they are not on the spare key chain, but I have no idea, haha.

Thoughts?

  • Mine also has a 2 keys for the slide switch, the door lock takes 2 different keys, and one to access the battery compartment in addition to those already mentioned.

With the exception on the ignition & entry door keys -

    Not to worry........
If you think you threw away a "good" one - the guy camping next to
you probably has one you can use...:W

Locking trailer hitch pin? Bike lock...and the previous owner forgot to take the key? I think keeping the unknown keys in a drawer in the RV would be a wise idea, at least for awhile, lest you discover something they went to at an inopportune time and not have them handy.

I "only" have five keys for my RV: a Ford key for the ignition and front doors, a round and a square key for the main entrance door latch lock and deadbolt, a CH751 for all the storage compartments, and a little emergency key for the cheap electronic safe I installed to keep s'mores chocolate safe from those who might otherwise be overcome by temptation (and also handy for petty cash and passports and such like things).

I wouldn't throw them away just yet. Much easier to keep them in a drawer for a year or so WITH A LABEL on them.

Does the spare tire possibly have a lock before you toss them?

    I don't have a spare tire.

The other thing that has a lock is the cover on the water tank fill vavle. I haven't tried ALL of the keys in all of the storage bays. I just tried them all in one until I found the one that worked, and it works in all of them.

It's in storage about a half hour away so I'll have to do another round of checking in about a week when I go back.

Anything else that would have a lock?
  • Zach, you're profile doesn't say what RV you have, but my DP uses six keys.

    *Main door lock
    *Main door deadbolt
    *Ignition
    *Storage compartments
    *Diesel lid over fuel cap
*Water lid cap over fresh water cap

The CH701 is a generic key that usually fits a storage door. Mine also fits the door for the water fill and electric power cord door. Just about every RV comes with this same key.
  • Try them all the locks. If they don't work in any locks, throw them away.
