Spare tire OR NOT

Our spare tire is 12 years old but it hasn't been used. We are planning to replace it (cost around $250), but since we have AAA . We thought since we have AAA, if we ever need tire service while we are on the road, we can just buy one on the spot (for much higher price) . $250 (cost of the spare tire) would be our 5 years payment for AAA RV service. Do you think this is a good idea (not to buy a spare tire and depend on AAA) or should we buy a new spare tire (knowing that we may never use it).

thanks
  • Spare will be a total loss of money, that is until you need it.

I agree with gbopp, better to have a spare then be stranded somewhere. Lots of open space in the west especially. Even an old inflated spare should get one to a town.
  • I always carry a spare.
I don't want to depend on AAA, Coach-Net or Good Sam to find a tire if I need it. However, I will let them change it.

I consider it cheap insurance from getting stranded somewhere it will take a day or two to get the right tire. JMO

    Enjoy your travels.
  • Since the spare is 12 years old anyway you may as well not have one
  • In ten years I've used the spare twice on the TT.
    Your call.
  • Seems to me if you're able to change the tire yourself then having a spare could be a good idea, especially if you like to camp off the beaten path. But if you're going to have to call someone to change the tire anyway, then why bother lugging all that extra weight around?
  • My trailer spare tire still has the new rubber tits on the tread and is a 15 year old OEM Carlisle ST225/75-15 D .

The first thing I do with any trailer is dump the ST tires and upgrade to the LT tires. In this case they were LT215/85-16 E tires. The trailer has 90k + miles and the spare hangs under the front and has never been on the ground.

At some point I'll give the Carlisle spare away and find a used tire to replace it with. I never bought new tires for a trailer spare even when I was on the road 24/7.
  • Spare tire on what? We have no idea what you have. That is an awfully expensive tire if you have a class B.

    Some thoughts;
will a tire be available when you need it?
how long do you want to sit on the side of the road waiting for a tire?
what will you do with the wrong size/brand tire you are forced to buy because it is the only thing available?
what is your tolerance for risk and adventure?

It can work but puts you at the mercy of forces beyond your control.
  • Ever think of replacing it with NEWER a good used tire????:B
