Spun motor home on I5

Last week I was driving from LA to SanJose on the I5. Downpour and fog coming through the Grapevine. Following about 20 car lengths behind a motor home. Next thing I see is the motor home facing me!
He blew a rear tire and spun 180 degrees, hit the median but thank God, didn't roll over.
I think his seats need a good cleaning now??

Most often it is the drivers natural response to want to hit the brakes. And this is what causes those spins. The uneven braking and traction on one side coupled with the movement (if any ) of a tread separation or blowout...leads with the wrong response to a spin.

Stay Off the brakes. give ;yourself a chance to slow down a bit then apply very light pressure to the brakes.

In some cases it might be that you actually have to SPEED up a little to offset the movement cause by the blowout, once straight come off the accelerator and slow down then begin braking lightly.

Much of this is simply driver error or inexperience with large vehicles. (and sometimes small ones)

Same thing happened in front of me on I5 in Washington many years ago. The guy lost both tires on one side. He ended up 90 degrees broadside across all 3 lanes with the tail on the center Jersey barricade. His towed was past him facing backward (the hitch ripped off the MH frame). We were to first to stop as an old guy with a little dog climbed out. "That was quite a ride," he said.

We had a nice empty freeway ahead of us after we left the scene.
  • It feels very scary when it happens is a small compact on the freeway at 70 mph. I had a tread come off a rear tire in a Subaru on I-30 near Sulpher Springs, TX in 1994 and did a 180 then went off the freeway. The tire never deflated.
  • Cant imagine the feeling as something that big spins out of control. Scary!
