Check out the drought history of California in Wikipedia.
The past hundred years have been just about the wettest in history. The normal state of that area is very dry. There was a 240 year drought in the 800s AD followed by 50 years of very wet weather followed by a drought of 180 years.
Nature seems to be getting back to where it was for a large part of the past.
Thanks To The California Drought, More Salmon Are Migrating By Truck
