I did see one where a guy swerved to miss a deer that jumped out on the road and ran head on into a car coming the other way causing serious injuries to in both vehicles and the deer was still hit and killed.
Yep, I got told exactly that in high school driver's ed, and it has been a lifesaver. Even a deer strike is a lot less damage than a head-on, and I've seen people try to dodge squirrels... only to hit a nearby pole.
