Strange price structures

I camped at Button Bay state park the other night. I had a very pleasant time of it, too; got a pretty private site, #18, and had good weather, and was not mired in the mud.

However, my main reason for camping was to empty the holding tanks in my RV. Vermont state park campgrounds charge $18 / $20 per night for residents, or $20 / $22 per night for non-residents, and that includes dump station use. Using the dump station if you don't camp overnight is $15 for RVs under 30', and $30 for RVs over 30'.

So, by camping for the night, I saved $12 on using the dump station.... :h

  • Obviously they want to discourage non campers from dumping there. The higher fee has nothing to do with camping rates and everything to do with keeping outsiders from using the dump station. As always one bad apple spoils it for everyone.
  • There were some empty sites, but I don't know whether they were sold or not. Certainly not all of them were sold because I got my site (without a reservation). I was actually surprised at how full the campground was on a Thursday night, but then again it is prime camping season in New England.

I would venture that most people would find a cheaper place to dump if they needed to do that on a regular basis. While emptying the tanks was what made me decide to go camping, I was of course also in it for the camping part, too.

I hadn't thought about hazmat disposal problems. It would seem to me that it might be obvious something is up when someone drives up and pours stuff down the hole in the ground rather than connecting a hose up to their RV. I don't think I would want to put a bunch of paint thinner or whatever down my gray/black tanks....but then again, successful criminals have to be pretty clever and devious.
  • What a bargain you got, eh?

Do they have many empty sites from people who pay to rent a site and then just use the dump?

People used to do something similar at Hillsborough SP in Florida when the pool was open. It was $6 per vehicle to get into the park plus $4 per person to use the pool.

But for $24/night you could rent a campsite for up to 8 people and you'd not be charged the vehicle entry fee and could use the pool for free.

If you had 8 people going swimming it would have been $38 (8 x $4 pp + $6 entry fee = $38) . It was less expensive to get a camp site, so you'd see some empty spots when the pool was open.

I'm not sure if it's still that way at HSP.
  • High dump fees are caused by illegal dumping of hazardous wastes.

I camper that stays overnight more than likely isn't there to dump hazardous waste/chemicals.
