Not necessarily while camping, but . . . .
I was in Lowes one day when some guy asked to borrow my knife. He returned it after breaking the blade, which he'd used to try and pry something apart. I do not lend pocket knives to anybody anymore.
I was in a seminar once when a guy seated next to me asked to borrow a pen. I had two with me, one in my hand was a fountain pen (NOBODY ever gets that one, as someone else writing with it ruins the feel I prize so much -- if you don't use one, you wouldn't understand). The other was an ultra-fine point permanent marker, not especially useful on paper. When I refused, he went on a rant about what an evil person I was, so I handed him the marker to shut him up so I could hear the speaker. Afterward it made me mad enough to come up with the proper counter-rap about what an inconsiderate and selfish boob wanders around unprepared and expects everyone else to cover for his incompetence, so don't even try going off on me should I not lend you whatever you requested!
But I'm generally pretty generous to borrowers, provided it's not too much out of my way.
