So much for not getting snow in Birmingham,AL. We got 2" of snow and it shut down the roads. Major accidents everywheres. ,Been stuck on I20 since 2:30pm yesterday with no sign of us moving. Someone bring me water and food please. Alabama please get some deicing equipment.

Probably not going to happen...not cost-effective. We're used to dealing with hurricanes. Baton Rouge is shutdown. When roads and (elevated) bridges ice over, the roads are too bad for us. Police close the roads until they thaw. I feel sorry for the truck drivers. Saw a sleet-covered car rear window that said, "Bring on the global warming." It's suppose to get better tomorrow and be in the 70s by the weekend.Cat Lady

I'm in Tallahassee Florida with sleet everywhere and more predicted to come. I-10 shut down from Gadsden County west to Pensacola. ALLLL of our schools are closed today, but tomorrow pm we expect a warming in Tally to around 60-plus. If ya ain't from Buffalo, Chicago or Minnesota, (OK, Ohio), then southerners are clueless about driving in anything other than rain lolol.

Finally got home at 11:45 this morning. 25 hours to drive 63 miles. Could have driven to NY and back in that time. Be safe everyone.

Kudos to Home Depot, Walgreens, and other businesses for sheltering stranded travelers. Same to the NG and volunteers who handed out food and water on the i'states.

Boo-dos to GA state and Atlanta governments for poor preparation, poor handling, & not calling off school earlier.

I'm not sure which the motorists of the area deserve. Basic common sense says you don't drive with snow in the forecast without a near-full gas tank, blankets, and some emergency kit. Abandoning a vehicle in a travel lane should be a last resort. A lot of 'tire spinning' cars shown on the news just needed to lower tire pressures and ease off the gas. 'Living in the south' is a pretty poor excuse for lack of basic stuff. Oh, well...

Nephew in Atlanta area left work at 4pm and arrived home at 2pm today. Spent 10 hours in his car on the highway. He is originally from MI, but other cars all over kept anyone from trying to go anywhere. We are at the gulf coast(MS) and everything is still ice here. Got up to 33 today for a couple of hours but then back to freezing by 3pm. Had to use a credit card for an ice scraper when I got out of work yesterday to clear the windshield. Dummy us - didn't keep a snowbrush/scraper in the Jeep when we left MI -- didn't think we would use it again. Drive home was slow and steady - just fearful of all those cars that had MS license plates -- would they create a problem? Going way too fast on ice!

You must be stealing our snow. Usually by now the MH is buried under 3+ feet of snow. There is only about 6" on it now and the ski areas are depending on man made snow.

Send your snow up here.

I don't understand why many drivers insist on ignoring warnings and hit the roads.

Because they bought that four wheel drive vehicle. and dang it they are going to use it. (right into a ditch)

On edit: I can no longer get TWC so don't know what they were forecasting. Sorry to hear about AL but our good ole boys here in South Louisiana nailed it. Sun's trying to come out now but it still won't start warming up until tomorrow.

Thank you, sir! That is exactly what many folks from up north just don't understand. Here in the southern mountains, we not only have that kind of freezy skid stuff to deal with, we also have hills, blind curves, and heavily shaded spots to complicate matters.

I had a rather prolonged...errr, 'discussion' with a northerner on the B forum a few years ago... he'd 'never been stuck' in the winter in a RWD B van without chains, and thought all my suggested preparations absurd. Of course, he apparently lived in the Canadian flatlands.

Sorry to hear about the snow problems in the south.

Two days prior to the snow storm public officials in the south were pleading with drivers to stay home and off the roads. It was even on the local news here in Ohio.

We deal with the stuff all the time and the road crews are prepared for storms. The southern states get storms like this so infrequently that the road crews simply don't have the necessary equipment.

I don't understand why many drivers insist on ignoring warnings and hit the roads. I do hope everyone survives and gets home safely.

Several years ago,Pennsylvania had a major snow storm on Valentines Day.The state's response was pathetic.People were trapped on the interstate for days.It wasn't the government that came to the rescue,it was private citizens on snowmobiles who delivered food and drink to those stranded. WE spend billions of dollars on emergency management plans so it makes no sense why a state or the feds can't make contingency plans for snow and ice storms.From what I heard,the biggest mistake in the Atlanta area was closing schools,businesses and government offices at the same time creating a massive traffic jam.That could have bee aleviated by staggering closing times.
