I remembered the story about Sky Harbor closing a little differently, so I googled this story of KPHO Ch. 5:
"Deborah Ostriecher, Sky Harbor's Aviation Director said, "There is urban legend about the time back in 1990 when the airport supposedly shut down, but in fact, that's not the case."
"What happened back in 1990 was that the manuals, say for a Boeing 727, didn't have takeoff data for the 122-degree record high temperature that day. So, that supplemental information had to be computed and faxed over, which ultimately caused numerous delays and cancellations. But now, computers have eliminated that problem, all but eliminating delays and/or cancellations due to extreme heat."
