Based on sounds, nothing hit right next door, but it still took out our stereo/DVD head unit. Learned that night to unplug the stereo if there is a lightning storm. Never lost one in 53 years, till a couple of weeks ago.
My point being, the PI might not have failed to protect, but a surge still came through. So unplug sensitive electronics if you are going to have a lightning storm.
This is where the higher Joules rating of the SurgeGuard might make a difference.
